This was my first time at the Black Sheep Gathering in Eugene, Oregon. I was a vendor in the marketplace this year and had the opportunity to get to know many new fiber friends. It was quite a trip for us from North Dakota, so we made the trip into a family vacation. Our first night of our trip (Monday) was spent sleeping in a tipi at Missouri Headwaters State Park in Montana. That was a fun experience for us all. We went down to the Redwood National Park in California and stayed in a cabin there and finally on Thursday we made it to Eugene for the Black Sheep Gathering.
My favorite part of the gathering was having the opportunity to meet several people that I have been doing business with for years through Etsy. It will be nice to be able to put a face to the lovely notes I receive in my packages from now on. Can you believe I have 65 sheep and still purchase wool?! 🙂
It was interesting to watch a sheep show where the sheep were judged for their quality of wool. We are accustomed to sheep shows in our area that only judge meat sheep. There were many wool breeds represented at the show and it was fun to see them all. I loved the sheep show and wish I would have had more time to watch all the shows.
There were hundreds of beautiful fleeces at the wool show. It was interesting to be able to watch the wool judging taking place. The judge talked about what he was looking for and was very informative during the judging. I wasn’t able to stay for the entire wool show, but would have loved to. Later I was able to go back and see what fleeces had won as well as walk around and touch and appreciate the different types of wool and their different characteristics. There was also an opportunity to purchase the wool at the wool sale!
A variety of classes were offered at the show, but again I wasn’t able to participate because I was a vendor. I was able to admire some of the things that were made in the classes as they walked by my booth.
If we would have had a trailer at the show I would have been tempted to snatch up several new sheep that were for sale. 🙂
Overall it was a fun experience for me and my family! I would recommend taking a trip to the Black Sheep Gathering if you ever get the chance, you will be glad you did.
