Land of the Free, Nome of the BraveIt’s our nation’s Independence Day, when we commemorate our emergence as a united country from a collection of colonies. It’s a time when we celebrate our industriousness and passion, as well as the pursuit of freedom and the honoring of our heritage.

Here at Bear Creek, we’re also celebrating a bit of local history and perseverance. It’s the first anniversary of the fully restored Nome Schoolhouse’s grand opening! Built a century ago, the Nome Schoolhouse housed an entire generation of students, only to lie dormant for years. In that typically American industrious spirit, Chris Armbrust and I saw the potential to create something even grander from this beautiful property.

Today, Nome Schoolhouse is a thriving hub of creativity, education, and our own brand of independence. We embrace local, sustainable agriculture and crafting…from our farm-to-table catering to the needle-felting retreats that use fleece grown right here by our flock. We’ve brought together a diverse community to build a new, unified destination for aspiring shepherds, fiber arts, and historians alike!

Last year’s Grand Opening was a red-white-and-blue spectacular as we celebrated both the Fourth of July and the restoration with much fanfare! While the Nome Schoolhouse renovation was wrapping up around the Fourth, we also wanted the Grand Opening to coincide with Independence Day as it was indeed an affirmation of our freedom, as entrepreneurs, artists, and innovators, to bring the Schoolhouse back to life.

This year, the Nome Schoolhouse has even surpassed our vision and is now a complete destination for weekend retreats, weddings, reunions, fiber arts activities, wildlife activities, and so much more.

Looking for a festive felting project to accompany the fireworks? I’ve got good news for you! Every year, we release a new summer sampler for the Fourth of July. Last year, it was a variety pack of summer-hued wools, and the year before, it was a beach ball kit. This year, the summer sampler pack is back with some vibrant colors, and we’ve also got a patriotic sampler pack of brilliant red, white, and blue Romney wool!

Join my Needle Felting Academy for easy online instruction as you felt a miniature American flag or whatever strikes your fancy this Fourth of July. Academy members also get a discount on the sampler packs, as well as other products in the Bear Creek shop.

This Fourth of July Nome Schoolhouse will be hosting a small event with music, food and fireworks. Come and join us as we celebrate a year of Nome Schoolhouse and of course, Independence Day!

Nome Schoolhouse is open for private bookings! We’ll gladly welcome you for your summer getaway. Our in-house chef, Libbie, is sure to break out some classic American fare! You can book a quiet room in the beautifully restored Schoolhouse, enjoy free breakfast, then soak up the sights of the gorgeous prairie and the sounds of songbirds. What better way to re-awaken your senses and appreciate your freedoms?
