Doctor Aviation

Aviation Curriculum

My youngest son is 14 and starting to consider his future and what he might want to do.  He has varied interests that we are exploring together to help him figure out which one is a good fit.  I was not aware that he had an interest in aviation until just recently. We were excited to be given the opportunity to review an aviation curriculum.   My son and I have been studying Aviation History with Doctor Aviation.  It has been a great adventure into the world of aviation.

Doctor Aviation

Doctor Aviation also known as Daryl Smith has spent 24 years in the Air Force as a Command Pilot with over 2,000 flying hours.  He also was an instructor in the United States Air Force Academy teaching aviation and other courses.  He desired to share his expertise with the world making it easy for them to learn by brining aviation into there homes through his online course. He shares his expertise through the courses in Doctor Aviation for those considering aviation as a career or those just wanting to learn more.

The course contains fifteen 45-50 minute video lessons with three segments (Technical Trivia, Notable Innovators, and Legendary Aircraft/Events). Each lesson also includes downloadable PDF files for further learning, testing, and scoring. Dr. Aviation recommends this course for ages 16 and up.

Below is a video I put together to show you how the site works and how easy it is to navigate. Doctor Aviation provides extra resources as well such as questions you can print out and use as worksheets or just use as a review to read over.  There are also book recommendations and links for further study to go along with each lesson.  You will see how extensive the resources are by watching the video below.

Our Thoughts

My son and I watched the videos together and we found each of the segments very interesting.  I especially enjoyed the historical segments and found Doctor Aviation to be a very good story teller making it personal by sharing how these people and events have influenced him.  The entire video for each lesson is long but can be broken down into the three smaller segments very easily.  The video consists of mostly Doctor Aviation talking with bits of pictures and video mixed in.

We found the extra resources to be very helpful because we love this type of learning style, where we are encouraged to dig deeper  and spend more time when interested in a certain topic.  We spent more time on the lesson on Chuck Yeager because my son found him interesting and we enjoyed reading the book recommended and checking out some of the links.

We have enjoyed our time learning about aviation and only wish we could go to an airshow to show off all we have learned.  We will have to wait until next summer when there will be one in North Dakota again.  My son (14) has enjoyed this course as well and we are looking forward to finishing and learning even more.
