12 years ago when we first started out on our homeschool journey we were introduced to G.A. Henty books. I was assured by a vendor at my very first homeschool convention that these books would be a hit with my kids, especially my boys. She was right, my oldest son truly enjoyed these books of history and adventure. My younger boys are not yet as enamored with reading as my oldest, so I was super excited to get the opportunity to review this amazing audio drama from Heirloom Audio Productions based on the book by G. A. Henty.
In case you are not aware of the author, he is best known for his historical adventure stories that were popular in the late 19th century. G.A. Henty’s adventure books emphasize traits of courage, high moral character, diligence, perseverance and other valuable personal virtues plus each adventure takes place within the setting of some important period in human history. Henty’s heroes live their adventures within exciting historical events. The books are noted for their detailed and accurate accounts of history and the ability to entertain and teach by the example of impeccable heroes.

We are a family that loves history and audio dramas so we were super excited to get an opportunity to review The Dragon and the Raven. I have to admit that I was not aware of Heirloom Audio before this review and maybe this is true for you as well. I am happy to have found them and I am very impressed with their mission to provide us with real history that will ignite a passion for living boldly in God’s world.
We all snuggled in to listen to our new audio adventure a few nights ago, my daughter working on her knitting project and me felting. We thought we would spend a couple evenings enjoying this drama but none of us wanted to stop listening. We finished the entire adventure in one evening. The story is not just read from a book, it is packed with amazing acting and sounds to make you feel as if you were there, like listening to a movie while enjoying your own pictures in your head. In a nutshell, we loved it.
- My 18 year old daughter was hoping we would be reviewing the rest of the Audio Adventures from Heirloom Audio.
- My 13 year old son said, “It was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be!” and would like the rest of the adventures for Christmas.
- My husband loves history, but tends to fall asleep when I read out loud. He stayed awake for the entire story and would love to hear more as well.
- I loved that it was about real Christian leaders that stood up for what they believe and hopefully became strong roll models for my children. It was exciting enough to hold everyones attention. (3 teenagers not looking at their phones) I also loved the opportunity to have wholesome entertainment and get work done at the same time.
- I know my 21 year old homeschool graduate will enjoy it as well.
Since we were so into the adventure that we finished it all in one night we listened again later and went through the 30 page eStudy guide of The Dragon and The Raven that included discussion points, history-learning guides and story-related Bible study.
The Study Guide provides questions to go through to make sure everyone is understanding what is going on in the story. Listening to it a second time and answering these questions together we realized there were things we were not aware of the first time around.
Discussion questions called Thinking Further were provided and were essential to go through and dig deeper into the history of the story as well as geography and Bible Study. I am always finding that there are some things I think my kids should know and either they don’t remember or it was something that we had never covered before.
Defining Words was helpful in making sure we understood all the vocabulary used in the story.
A Bible study is also included in the eStudy guide covering the things that King Alfred the Great felt strongly about; God’s Law and the Nations, Love Your Enemy and Literacy.
I found the study guide very helpful in making this fun adventure as educational as possible.
I highly recommend The Dragon and The Raven to homeschool parents and Christian friends that are looking for entertainment that will hold your kids attention, teach them history as well as strong Christian values. The bonus is, you will get to take a break while your kids enjoy an educational adventure plus you will enjoy it too. I am looking at the other audio adventures form Heirloom Audio as Christmas and birthday gifts for my family.
