Needle felting is the perfect way to pass time, reduce stress, and connect with those around you — things we could all use a little more of these days!

When people first hear about needle felting or see a needle felted creation, they always ask if it’s hard to learn. The answer is no, but it’s important to consider a few important things before you get started on your needle felting journey, and thankfully, your friends at Bear Creek are here to help you get started!

Here are 4 things to consider before you start needle felting:

1. You Might Become Addicted

There, we said it! Consider yourself warned! Needle Felting is a highly addictive craft, utilizing a continuous stabbing motion to create a firm felted creation from wool. It can be easy to lose track of time and forget to put your piece down to take a break. With that said, remember to pause, get up and walk around, and check in with your posture and even your physical needs — a.k.a. make sure you eat, drink, and get the sleep you need!

2. Animals Love Felt

There’s nothing worse than finishing a project, only to have it destroyed by your pet, so if you have some furry roommates, you might consider hiding your felt creations in a safe place. Our favorite things to needle felt are these adorable needle felted creatures, which to a pet, simply look like their next play toy.

3. It’s Important to be Careful With Your Needles

The one downside of needle felting is the pain that can come with not using the needle tool properly. It’s important to keep your eyes on the needle and make sure you don’t poke your finger — a skill that will help you focus and pay attention to details in other areas of your life!

While you’ll become better with time, you might consider having some bandaids on hand.

4. Start With the Basics First

It can be tempting to dive into the deep end when first starting a craft, but it’s vital to stick with the basics as you get going. From learning how to hold your needle to gaining the proper techniques for creating your felted creations, starting with the basics will give you a foundation to grow from. We recommend starting with one of our needle felting kits. Each kit comes with everything you’ll need to make your first beautiful creation, along with detailed instructions!
