When I first started my journey in needle felting, I was filled with passion and creativity, but I’ll admit, I was clueless about pricing. How do you put a value on something that comes straight from your heart and soul?
At the outset, I attempted the traditional approach of calculating an hourly wage and factoring in material costs. However, I quickly found myself tangled in a web of uncertainty. Not only was I terrible at remembering to trackmy time, but I also struggled with determining what my time was truly worth. It felt like I was reducing my art to mere numbers on a spreadsheet, devoid of the passion that fueled its creation.
So, I took a step back and reflected on what truly mattered to me as an artist. I realized that my pricing needed to reflect not just the hours spent and materials used, but also the emotional attachment I had to each piece.
Of course, I started with modest prices, testing the waters to see how customers responded. If demand exceeded supply, I gradually increased the prices until they reached a point where I felt comfortable. This way, I could gauge the true value of my art in the eyes of those who appreciated it most.
And you know what? This approach worked wonders for me. Not only did it give me the confidence to price my creations fairly, but it also ensured that they found homes where they would be cherished and admired.
Now, as I look back on my journey, I realize that finding the right pricing strategy was about more than just numbers—it was about finding a balance between valuing my time and honoring the emotional connection I have with my art.
So, to all my fellow artists out there grappling with pricing dilemmas, I encourage you to look beyond the spreadsheets and trust your instincts. Your art is worth more than you know, and finding the right price tag is just another step in your creative journey.
