Do You Want to Build a Snowman?

Every time I hear that song, I immediately think, “Yes, of course!” And what a perfect idea for a movie with strong themes of family love and fun. Snowmen and women — snow people! — have long been a cherished winter tradition. But of course, snow isn’t always available, especially if you’re down South!

For me, that’s a big part of the joy of needle felting: you can create anything in your imagination. It’s a wonderful family activity as well. Anyone can learn needle felting, which makes it a wonderful, relaxing craft for the whole family!

So, if you want to build a snowman but snow is in short supply — or you just want to avoid the cold! — try needle felting a snowman friend! Here’s my felting kit for a traditional snowman. Want to felt a whole snow family? Stock up on white wool or you can buy the materials to make another snowman.

This design is inspired by the snowman style in classic art, literature such as the lovely children’s book The Snowman (1978), and beloved movies such as Frosty the Snowman! People have been building snowmen since the 14th century. It’s long been a way to celebrate winter beauty with your loved ones.

Of course, half the fun of building a snowman is giving him unique features. With needle felting, it’s even easier to give your snow person multiple fashion choices. You can knit your snow friend their very own scarf, earmuffs, or even a wool top hat just like Frosty’s! If you love knitting, here’s a simple pattern for a classic wool cap and scarf. The colors are up to you!
