Here at Bear Creek, we’re wrapping up lambing season, and the motherly love is flowing among our flock! There are few sights more heartwarming than a ewe and her baby. And now, it’s also time to celebrate our own mothers. This year, Mother’s Day is on May 8, and what better way to celebrate than with creativity?
Our mothers loved our macaroni art and clay figures, and I know yours will adore a handmade gift that comes straight from the heart! As a mother myself, I’ve been so proud to see my daughter Libbie’s creative growth. She loves knitting and cooking, and she inspired me to start shepherding when she asked for a lamb for her birthday.
We’ll be celebrating the way we always do: making wonderful things together here on the farm. And we welcome you to join us! We’ve turned Nome Schoolhouse into a lovely destination where you and your mother can explore the world of fiber arts and enjoy some time in nature. Book a retreat and enjoy our creative oasis together.
Can’t make it Mother’s Day Weekend? We always have something going on. I’m excited to announce that we’re diversifying our crafts curriculum and offering a basketweaving class in May.
Later in the year, we have our Needle Felting Safari and many other fun events. In short, there’s always a good time to celebrate with family here at the Nome Schoolhouse.
Of course, if you’re interested in the fiber arts, a needle-felted creation could be the perfect gift for your amazing mom. I have plenty of wonderful felting kits for all skill levels. You could give your mom a teddy bear like the one she gave you as a child — albeit a bit smaller. My newest kit, the adorable duckling, is perfect for the spring season.
Try felting your mom’s favorite animal. I have a whole menagerie of tutorials in my Needle Felting Academy, including many jungle creatures, barnyard animals, and even the majestic blue whale. And if Mom’s favorite isn’t among my kits and you’re up for a challenge, you can start from scratch and design your own. (Tip: Stock up on wool colors and needles first!)
Here are some other ideas for creative, heart-felt (pun intended) gifts for Mother’s Day:
- Give Mom a unique way to carry her coins, jewelry, or tissues with this whimsical felted pouch.
- Felt a colorful globe, hoop, or leaf shape, then attach them to earring hooks or a simple chain for 100% unique, eye-catching jewelry!
- Set up a craft date with Mom. Needle felting is a fun activity even if you have no previous experience.
- Knit a carnation that will never dry out or fade. (Carnations are the traditional blooms to honor one’s mother.)
Mother’s Day is a time to appreciate the incredible women in our lives, from our literal mothers to the mentors and maternal figures who shaped us into who we are. Mothering is an act of creativity itself, so to me, the best way to celebrate is by creating lovely gifts and enjoying creative activities together. Whether you join us at Nome Schoolhouse in spirit or in person, I wish you and your moms a very happy Mother’s Day!
